Google regularly updates its algorithms to fight against spam. You can see spam updates even ten years back. For example, the Penguin Update from April 2012 was also implemented to fight against this problem, but these updates generally focus on specific types of spam. Only a few of them improve all the systems designed to fight against spam at the same time, but each update is vital for the well-being of the search system and its continuous evolution. Some people will always use black hat and gray hat SEO methods to try and trick the algorithm, so regular updates are essential and will continue to appear to combat them.

This search spam update is the first one and probably the last one implemented in 2022. A different situation happened last year when Google introduced four spam updates, the last of which was in November 2021. What about next year? We can be sure that such updates will continue to appear, but we can’t know how many will be implemented each year before they occur. These updates are also very effective, as seen from the low search spam in 2022. Webmasters can and should continue to follow the guidelines if they do not want to worry about losing ranks during these updates.
The purpose of the 2022 spam update was to improve the spam detection techniques used by Google’s algorithms, making them a lot more effective against black hat and gray hat SEO methods that go against spam policies. It is a rare search spam update focusing on all parts of the spam detection system. The range covered by this update includes all regions and languages, so every indexed site on the internet will be impacted by it.
What Were the Effects Caused by This Update, and How Should You Adapt Your Strategy?
You can easily see the changes caused by an update using Google tracking tools. For example, you can see on Semrush that the changes were minimal during the implementation of this 2022 spam update. You couldn’t see any differences compared with other regular days, meaning the search spam in 2022 is minimal. Most webmasters have learned over the years the importance of following Google’s rules and the dangerous penalties they could get for spamming. As you can see in the image below, the changes were more significant in the following days, but the cause is not this update.
The fact that the changes were minimal does not mean no one was affected by this search spam update, and your website could be one of the few victims. What can you do in that situation? How can you recover after being penalized by Google’s algorithms? First, you must eliminate all the content flagged as spam from your website. You can find them and your spam score on MOZ.com. Otherwise, you won’t ever be able to recover from getting hit by spam updates. Secondly, you must thoroughly check Google’s guidelines and make sure your website follows them.
