AI search is fundamentally changing the way users discover, share and use content online. The digital medium has undergone significant modifications in the last couple of years, mainly due to the implementation of AI tools in conventional search results. AI-generated overviews and generative search results have fundamentally modified the way users and crawling agents interact with indexable content.

A New Era that Requires AI Optimization
Nowadays, position one in the SERPs is no longer the ultimate goal for any modern SEO approach. In fact, SERP position, in this world when LLMs and sophisticated AI algorithms can summarize entire pages, even before users click on them, is no longer truly reflective of the efficiency of implemented digital marketing approaches. We are no longer in the Google Page Rank days, in which the only thing that mattered was the quantity and quality of gathered hyperlinks.
The digital medium has changed, AI has forced Google to implement its biggest upgrade to its search function in the last 25 years, and the end result is simple: AI is here to stay, and it can speed up SEO efficiency. However, relying on it without proper guidance from SEO experts, such as we are, can lead to damage to rankings and AI visibility losses in Google AI results.
How to use AI
What Is Generative Search?
You can think of generative search as a search engine technology that utilizes sophisticated algorithms and LLMs in order to deliver a personalized search experience to end users, without simply matching keywords to specific query patterns. In AI-driven search, crawling algorithms utilize advanced AI-assisted models in order to understand the semantics behind the indexed content, and create summaries that are then presented to users.
Modern AI systems don’t necessarily replace traditional search structures but are built on top of them and have the role of providing direct answers to users without them needing to interact with particular websites or indexable pages. In a way, you can think of AI visibility and AI-assisted search as “Internet-in-Internet”.
AI-generated overviews and generative search engines are designed to provide direct answers to specific queries. The crawling agents used by AI-based search engines scan multiple sources at once, extract information that AI-assisted algorithms deem relevant to users, and utilize that info to create a concise response.

The Numbers Speak for Themselves
Websites present in number in the SERPs can see CTR drops of up to 79% when AI-generated overviews are present, and the number of searches that result in zero clicks is now rising faster than ever. On desktop, the number currently sits at 65%, while on mobile it is close to 70%.
Yes, generative search currently doesn’t replace traditional SEO, or at least not completely. Google still utilizes crawling and conventional indexing systems in order to determine the SERP positioning of indexable websites, so, in a way, our work to provide AI SEO services is now twofold.
We need to optimize your content for traditional ranking factors, perform complex, technical SEO audits, and invest in backend optimization strategies and link-building frameworks. But that’s just part of the puzzle.
Generative Search vs Traditional SEO
Besides deploying local SEO services and optimization for regional users, we also need to create content with a clear focus on factual accuracy and clarity, which can make it more likely to get featured in AI interpretation layers and increase your site’s presence in AI Overviews. Is it easy? No, it’s not. AI has fundamentally changed the way SEO strategies work.
Conventional SEO strategies used to focus on modifications to keyword placement, ranking signals such as backlinks, or changes to CWSs. All these are still relevant and fundamental for SERP ranking; that’s true. But in 2026, the rise of AI-driven search has changed the questions that must be asked before the launch of SEO optimization campaigns. AI prefers:
- Well-organized content with clear logical sections
- Topical clarity that provides succinct answers to specific queries
- Direct explanations that make use of clear formatting cues
- Trust signals that showcase the credentials of the authors
Generative Search vs Traditional SEO
Conventional SEO practices are still relevant even in the context of modern AI search optimization. But, in order to optimize content for generative search, our team will need to:
- Structure your content with question-based headings
- Reinforce topical authority via internal links
- Include concise summaries at the end of each heading section
- Use lists and tables whenever possible
- Improve E-E-A-T signals
- Implement schema markup in the HTML of the pages
- Optimize the content’s meta-descriptions
Most of these practices will sync with conventional SEO approaches, but the emphasis shifts from trying to gain rankings to fishing for citations in AI passages. With AI search, the focus of SEO shifts. Suddenly, SERP rankings are less relevant, as websites have encountered significant CTR losses even when achieving top five rankings in Google search. This is unprecedented in the digital space and requires a new approach for appeasing crawling agents.
Why Generative Search Can Hurt Google Rankings?
There’s a huge misconception right now about SEO and AI search engines. Google really doesn’t care whether you are using AI or not when developing the content present on your websites. AI, in itself, is not harmful to digital visibility. The poor implementation of AI, however, is. And that’s because it often goes against the authority signals imposed by Google with its E-E-A-T framework.
In fact, as of right now, it’s pretty much impossible to detect content written with AI with 100% accuracy. This is one of the reasons why many publishers and major universities have abandoned the use of AI detection software. Their unreliability is problematic.
For Google crawlers, a bare-bones AI text and a poorly written, human-authored article look identical, so they are mashed together. The issue is not AI. It’s that AI, as of 2026, often generates thin, duplicated content that uses keyword stuffing and triggers spam-like signals in search rankings.
AI is a Tool, not a Strategy
It’s pretty much impossible not to integrate AI into modern workflows. Our team, for example, doesn’t use AI for the generation of articles or the technical and on-page optimization of indexable web directories. But we cannot say that AI, with human supervision, is not a tool that can speed up work processes. AI can aid conventional SEO strategies and help with generative engine optimization. But a robust SEO strategy will still require:
- Editorial review for the created E-E-A-T content
- Authority development by using human-generated prompts
- Human review of KPI data
- Human-led keyword planning
- Robust technical audits and backed data optimization

Top AI SEO Mistakes Webmasters Should Avoid
Publishing Content Without Human Editing
As we have already established, Google doesn’t penalize indexable content just because it was written or assisted with AI tools. In fact, it’s pretty much impossible to know for sure whether or not the content was fully written with/without AI involvement. In 2026, good AI-assisted articles are pretty much indistinguishable from human-authored ones.
The problem, therefore, lies in publishing raw AI content without any sort of human overview. AI can often produce fluent, semantically relevant content, but it often lacks the real-life context that makes a good article stand out. AI with human supervision can be used successfully for the deployment of long-term marketing frameworks. But, unedited AI, as of 2026, often creates repetitive, thin content that can make it unlikely to get featured in AI results.
Ignoring Search Intent in AI Content Optimization
The utilization of AI for the creation of content at scale is now interwoven with the very fabric of the modern internet. In fact, recent estimates put the number of AI-developed content at 50% of all the pages currently indexed by Google.
Pretty impressive, especially considering that the development of AI is only a blip on the timeline of the modern internet. AI is the future, sure, but if the developed indexable content doesn’t align with user intent, then no matter how good those articles are, their vagueness will make them unlikely to get featured in AI search results.
Over-Optimizing Content for AI Results
Now, this one is true both for content AI optimization and conventional SEO practices. AI tools can easily develop keyword-heavy content, but this in itself can be flagged by Google as a “grey-hat” SEO technique. Keyword stuffing is no longer a good option in the context of modern SEO approaches. Contemporary SEO relies on semantic relevance and precise topical coverage.
Excessive keyword repetition, on the other hand, might do more harm than good. Even if using a freelancer or an SEO agency, one thing is certain. SEO experts will tell you that the time for keyword stuffing has long passed, and nowadays, semantic relevance matters far more than hitting a certain number of keywords.
Publishing Low-Value Spam at Scale
One of the main reasons for using AI systems for content creation is the capacity of AI models to develop large-scale content that can later be utilized for blog or website posting frameworks. But mass-producing AI articles without adding unique, human-centered insights will make it hard to follow the E-E-A-T framework.
In the context of YMYL niches, the E-E-A-T signals are essential for SERP ranking and overviews visibility. But the publication of near-duplicated pages, with only keyword variance, can make it hard to follow them.
Not Structuring Content at All for AI Results
AI search systems prefer to index and cite content that’s structured to answer specific queries. In order to make your content more likely to appear in AI overviews, our team will:
- Target conversational queries, as these are the ones more likely to match AI overview formats
- Optimize the content for micro-level indexing by making each content substructure understandable for crawling agents, even in a non-semantic context
- Cover content concepts in the same topic cluster
- Implement schema markup via JSON-LD in the page’s HTML.
- Utilize a list format and implement content-rich tables whenever necessary
- Keep the pages aligned with the CWVs.

How To Use AI Systems Properly for Website Structure?
In order to optimize content for AI and make it more likely to appear in Google’s AI-generated overviews, our team can use various tools such as Ahrefs and SEMrush in order to gather the KPIs necessary for the development of an SEO strategy with a focus on boosting Google rankings.
That said, SERP rankings have transformed from the ultimate goal of an SEO strategy to just a part of the elements that can influence the CTRs of a website. AI has changed the game, and nowadays, the utilization of AI, with human assistance, is a fundamental part of modern SEO strategies. How can we make use of AI?
1) Content Architecture and Topic Clustering
AI is great at analyzing large keyword datasets and identifying the keyword relevance between different topic clusters. It can, therefore, be utilized by our SEO professionals to identify structural issues that can impact the end user’s search experience and influence the AI visibility of content for crawling agents. Our team might use AI to optimize content for crawling agents, match it to pillar or supporting pages and augment the navigation of these pages by helping with hierarchization.
2) Connect Keywords to Precise Topical Coverage
AI search engines don’t care much about the number of external hyperlinks or indexed keywords present in an article. Instead, the focus lies mostly on the topicality of the indexed information for the precise query of the end user. It’s not about the number of keywords, but instead it’s about the linkage of these keywords to the semantic cues of the content present on the website.
AI is great at connecting keywords directly to pages and mapping search terms into logical sections. Human input will still be required to ensure the content structure matches business goals, but AI can be a tool to link high-volume keywords to pillar pages or match landing pages to transactional queries.
3) Improve Internal Linking Structure Using AI
In the context of AI content optimization, AI-assisted applications can scan your pages and suggest internal link insertions based on the website’s authority flow. Our team could make use of AI to:
- Detect orphaned pages that are unindexable by Google’s crawling agents
- Find linking opportunities between pages with contextual similarities
- Strengthen front-facing, high-value landing pages with more internal signals from secondary pages.

How to Make AI-Assisted Content Better than Competitor Articles?
AI-assisted articles can look similar to each other, as most current AI models are trained on the same set of data. The problem with most pages written fully with AI is that they regurgitate the same informational package, just in a different semantic format, and therefore, they fail to stand out. Google doesn’t care if your site is filled with AI-written articles. It does care, however, if your articles are thematically identical to thousands of others indexed that day alone. Therefore, our team will:
Add Real-World Value to the Content
AI is good at summarizing information, but it has a difficult time adding real-life experiences and thematic context to the data it spews out. For example, AI can list you the main benefits of an electrolyte drink, but it will have trouble developing accurate insights about the utilization of an electrolyte drink in real-life scenarios. Sure, it tries, but it’s often not believable. We will therefore:
- Add practical insights to the developed content
- Introduce context-dependent nuances
- Humanize the text, and make it address the specific queries searched by core audiences
Strengthen E-E-A-T Signals
This, in a way, goes hand-in-hand with the actions laid out in the previous subsection. To beat competitive pages, your articles must signal credibility, and in order to do so, we will:
- Cite first-hand experiences, if relevant, for the products and services being presented
- Include reliable data sources, with a high authority score
- Fact-check the presented information, so no errors slip through. Remember, AI is great, but it has a tendency to hallucinate and get stuff wrong.
FAQs About AI Search
1) Is AI-Generated Content Bad for SEO?
ANo, but it depends on its implementation in the larger scheme of an SEO optimization framework. AI is just a tool, and Google doesn’t automatically penalize content that’s written or edited with AI tools.
In fact, it cannot detect such content with 100% accuracy, and the ship has already sailed, considering that more than 50% of all indexed content is now written with artificial intelligence. Google instead prioritizes content with strong authority signals that add value to specific queries. And this is where AI has issues. It’s about the quality of the developed content, not its provenance.
2) What Is the Biggest AI SEO Mistake?
AThe biggest mistake you can make right now, in the context of an AI-focused optimization framework, is to publish content, fully developed by AI, without fact-checking the presented information or editing the end result. AI is good, but not great, and fully-generated AI content can still lead to duplicated information and contribute to thin pages with weak authority signals.
3) Can AI Help Improve Website Structure?
AYes, AI can be a tool to identify topic clusters, internal linking opportunities, match keywords with specific semantic hubs, or spot content gaps that can be exploited through a well-implemented content creation framework. That said, all the structural recommendations of AI applications must be checked by a human SEO specialist.
4) How Should You Optimize Content for AI Search?
AIn a nutshell, in order to increase the likelihood of getting featured in AI-generated overviews, the content on your pages must be clearly structured, answer specific queries, and include strong topical coverage. It should also include schema markup and, of course, be factually accurate.
5) Do I Still Need an SEO Expert If I Use AI?
AYes, and this will remain the case for a while. AI can support SEO tasks, but currently it cannot replace the experience and strategic thinking of SEO specialists. AI is still prone to mistakes; it often hallucinates, and you cannot reliably make use of it for a fully-fledged SEO strategy.
