SERP Volatility Image
In the simplest of terms, we can define SERP volatility as how much and how often the Google search position of your website changes for specific keywords. In other words, was your website ranked first in the SERPs yesterday, but today, for some reason, it’s only ranked third? That’s volatility, and our duty, as SEO professionals, is to figure out why that happened. High SERP volatility can have a lot of causes, but most often than not, these SERP fluctuations will happen because of Google algorithm updates, or modifications in how your content is indexed by crawling agents.

Why Did SERP Volatility Increase Since the 2023-2025 Google Algorithm Updates?
Well, there are a couple of reasons for this. Number one? The quantity of Google algorithm updates and helpful content modifications has risen sharply in the last couple of years, partially due to the increasing influence of AI practices in the digital spectrum. Since 2023 and until now, Google has implemented no less than 11 core updates, 2023 and 2024 each seeing no less than four such modifications, while 2025 so far remains an exception, with only three core updates, the last one being rolled out in December.

SERP Monitoring Tools
SERP positions are not fixed, which is precisely the reason why the high-quality link-building packages and comprehensive technical audits performed by our team can help. Search engine reassesses the ranking position of indexable websites on a daily basis, via an automated crawling procedure, in which they utilize machine learning models to calculate the real-time relevance of the indexed pages.
So, in short, once Google indexes your website and you rank in the SERPs, your position will be constantly evaluated against competitors and ranked, positively or negatively, based on a multitude of factors. This is why SERP monitoring is so important. For each new web crawl, the algorithm agents utilized by search engines detect new content, identify broken links, discover potential site structure changes and of course, rank and de-rank websites based on their findings.
Crawling agents constantly evaluate your site’s link signals. They leverage highly complex machine learning models to reevaluate the relevancy of your indexable content and they monitor engagement data in order to determine how user behavior changes can feed back into Google’s principal ranking signals. Usually, these evaluations happen gradually, which is why search engine ranking fluctuations are traditionally quite low. But in some cases, SERP fluctuations can spike, especially after Google algorithm updates, and lead to SERP volatility that will need to be evaluated via constant SERP monitoring.

SERP Volatility Causes vs Impact
Google Core Updates & Algorithm Turbulence
Google algorithm updates can mostly be divided into two categories:
- There are the small, less impactful updates that are designed to target specific subsectors of the crawling algorithms and modify the framework utilized by them to evaluate search engine ranking position, and then there are the core updates, which are an entirely different beast.
- Core algorithm updates are broad, significant modifications to the algorithms utilized by Google, which have the role of significantly modifying the signals used by crawling agents and helping high-quality content surge more easily in the SERPs.
Core updates are not small modifications to the backend algorithms used by website-crawling agents. They are broad changes that take a long time to fully deploy, and they can affect everything from the way content quality is now evaluated by Google’s machine learning models to influencing the E-E-A-T framework for long-term SERP projections. The problem? After so many modifications, SERP volatility is pretty much expected. Each core update can and in most cases does cause search rankings’ turbulence for around two weeks after the update rolling out process finishes. But let’s give some examples.
- The March core update of 2025, launched on the 13th of March, and completed its rolling out process, 14 days later, on March 27th. It was a broad core update that adjusted Google’s ranking systems across a multitude of websites, not bound by geographical location. In tracking tools, the volatility of the March update was similar to that of the one implemented in December of 2024.
- The June core update, implemented on June 30 and finished on July 17, caused even more SERP volatility, with some websites experiencing significant SERP downgrades, even after they were previously affected by the March update.
- Google’s December core update began in mid-December and continued until 29 December. The volatility from that can still be visible in rankings into mid-January.
Helpful Content System Changes
Google Content System Illustrative
Google’s Helpful Content System’s main role is to promote high-quality content and ensure that only original, helpful pages, written by people and for the interests of the people, are pushed in the SERPs. In other words, the Google Helpful Content Systems ensure that AI-written slop and overly SERP-focused content remains in check, while also promoting and rewarding websites with high authority scores, which can bend their content creation strategies around the E-E-A-T framework.
How has HCS impacted SERP volatility in the last couple of years? Well, there were a couple of backend modifications to the Google algorithms that prompted a change in search engine ranking systems. HCS originally worked as a standalone ranking classifier, but after the algorithm updates launched by Google at the start of 2024, helpfulness signals started to be integrated directly in Google’s core ranking systems.
This means that HCS has started since then to become stricter at identifying SEO-focused content and often penalizes websites that utilize grey-area SERP-enhancement practices, such as keyword stuffing. Plus, in early 2024, Google shifted from site-level signals to individual, page-level helpfulness, and in 2023, it added a new signal to the E-E-A-T framework, namely, the “Experience” one.
Search Intent Instability
As a basic definition, search intent instability can be looked at as a process by which Google shifts and changes its understanding of what users want when submitting a specific query. This can substantially modify the results presented for specific search patterns, as Google can present a large assortment of options for the same search terms. It doesn’t help that in 2025, Google utilizes machine-learning algorithms to generate answers for specific queries, the so-called AI overviews. So, most SEO approaches that target intent instability automatically start dealing with GEO.
The problem is that in recent years, Google has started to reassess its indexable content often and dynamically, which in turn resulted in significantly more SERP volatility. Search engine rankings are changing now more often than they were five or ten years ago, and instead of focusing on the static intent of specific keywords, Google algorithms utilize advanced machine-learning techniques to analyze behavioral data and adjust the SERP layout per intent. In other words, even if your content doesn’t change, how you appear in the SERPs can.
What are the main causes of search intent instability? Well, 2026 is still a transitory year until Google fully embraces generative results, and therefore, we are in a weird period in which SERP layouts can be modified for the same query. Google’s intent classifiers recalibrate SERP rankings daily and trend-driven modifications are more common. The SERPs space in general is more volatile now that AI overviews were officially launched, and only via a complete SEO site audit can this increase reliance on behavior signals be mitigated in search results.
Indexing & Crawling Issues Alongside Keyword Cannibalization
SEO Indexing and Crawling Illustration
When a search engine is facing issues with your page’s indexation, SERP volatility can increase drastically, as there will not be a stable version of your content presentable for specific queries. SERP monitoring is essential to prevent indexing and crawlability issues, as a weak sitemap or bad internal links can affect how your content is displayed in search results or even orphan your pages from the other indexable parts of your domain. How can our SEO experts help with indexing and crawling issues? Let’s start from the beginning.
Our team will develop a search engine ranking report and determine which low-value pages can be eliminated from the website. The thing is, sometimes, crawl resources for particular domains are limited, and therefore, you want to be sure you rank only with those pages that can have a positive effect on overall CTRs. Likewise, our team will modify the page’s robots.txt file, create XML sitemaps that include only canonical URLs, and ensure the pages of your domain are not tagged with the “noindex” attribute.
We will implement structured data in the HTML of your page via JSON-LD, optimize your site for the CWVs and use the GSC to detect miscellaneous issues with a potential effect on your content’s indexation. As for keyword cannibalization, this happens when multiple pages target the same topic, and thus neither page can really build a strong authority score. To fix this, our professional SEO agency will start by identifying the pages that are in direct SERP contradiction to one another, merging them into one, highly-authoritative page, and adjusting the internal links that made references to them.
How Does SEO Volatility Impact SEO and Business Performance?
Seo Volatility Impact Image
Whether you are looking to utilize the services of an online reputation management company or the expertise of our local SEO experts, the end result of your digital endeavors will, in large part, be impacted by SERPs volatility. It’s almost impossible to accurately predict your long-term profitability and develop a marketing strategy when SERP volatility causes your ranking to fluctuate pretty much overnight. SERP volatility can make organic traffic unstable, which in turn could necessitate increased PPC spending only to make your lead flows consistent again.
SERP volatility makes it hard to plan a long-term SEO strategy, as you don’t know which strategy worked, which keywords were targeted by the crawling agents, or what on-page or backend modifications should be prioritized. Sure, up until a point, search engine ranking modifications are somewhat expected. After all, the crawling agents utilized by Google to determine the relevance of indexable content are suffering modifications with each passing core algorithm update. But, if too much SERP volatility accumulates, your brand visibility might suffer significant drops, and your operational costs will increase, as you will need to force additional content updates and audit your website once again.
Can we mitigate the impact of SERP volatility before it has the chance to affect your site’s long-term search engine ranking? Yes, but it will take some effort. In order to secure your SERP position, our specialized team will need to constantly monitor your traffic and conversion with the help of professional SEO tools such as Ahrefs or SEMrush. At the same time, we will diversify your keyword plan, ensure your content falls in line with the E-E-A-T guidelines, implement structured data in the HTML of your pages and modify your site’s backlink profile.
How Will We Reduce SERP Volatility by Enhancing Your Site’s Backend Operations?
Website Backend Optimization Illustration
The key to a successful SERP-focused digital approach lies in white-label technical SEO. Our team will ensure that your site is crawlable, properly indexed, fast, in line with the CWVs and properly viewable both for desktop devices as well as for mobiles. How can we help? Well, we will start by assessing the main backend elements of your pages with a direct effect on crawlability.
We will audit your site’s link profile, fix or eliminate the ones that result in 404 errors, correct internal references that result in 301 errors, optimize your site’s XML maps, and, of course, modify the page’s robots.txt files. We will also audit your website for potential orphan pages and implement the “noindex” HTML tag for content that should not be indexable by search engine crawlers.
As for the improvements to the site’s performance, we will compress your images by changing their format, minify your CSS and HTML files, implement a CDN whenever necessary, or leverage server-side caching. The goal, in the end, is to make you fall in line with the LCP, FID, and CLS maximum thresholds, and ensure that your website is properly optimized for screens of all sizes. We will add structured data in the HTML of your pages via the JSON-LD format, we will analyze and modify your page’s URL structure, and of course, we will improve the page’s security by implementing HTTPS site-wide.
When Is SERP Volatility Actually a Good Sign?
Checking SERP Volatility Video
SERP volatility usually happens after major algorithm modifications that disturb the status quo of the digital landscape. But, if you think about it, these ranking modifications do not necessarily have to be something negative. Big swings in digital rankings can represent healthy competition in the industry and signal that newly established websites are gaining authority due to the quality of their services and website optimization. In the end, no matter how you look at it, the websites that benefit from increased SERP visibility gain these new rankings because they are doing something right.
Search engine crawlers constantly reassess the authority of indexable websites and determine the helpfulness ranking of the sources utilized in the generation of AI overviews. Since search engine algorithms now mainly focus on generative results, these periodic reassessments happen with increased frequency. In other words, in this modern digital climate, newly-established websites have more chances to increase in digital rankings, which, sure, will result in SERP volatility, but at the same time will also signal content evolution and healthy competition.

FAQ:
1) What does it mean when I experience SERP modifications without content adjustments?
ASince the introduction of AI overviews, SERP ranking fluctuations are happening with increased regularity, and in most cases, these visibility modifications are not even influenced by changes in your content creation strategy. Google constantly reassesses indexable websites’ quality and the intent behind specific queries and only by monitoring your keyword cluster can you differentiate between normal SERP swings and drops caused by modifications in your digital approaches.
2) How can long-term keywords help improve my ranking in specific, highly competitive niches?
ALong-tail keywords are advantageous in highly competitive industries, as they match precise user intent, which is exactly the type of thing that search engine crawlers are trying to mark these days. Targeting them can reduce your page’s SERP volatility, as the queries of the user will more easily be matched with the pages that answer them. On top of that, since they are specific, long-term keywords also typically lead to more CTRs, as users who make them are more likely to look for particular products and services.
3) Can Internal Links Help Minimize the Effects of Search Engine Algorithm Updates?
ASort of. Internal links can signal to Google which of your pages should be prioritized for indexation and be connected to specific keywords that match particular queries. Internal links show crawling algorithms which pages are more relevant for specific content clusters, they can reduce keyword cannibalization and they mitigate somewhat the effects of algorithm updates. That said, their implementation alone cannot fully prevent SERP volatility.
4) Why Does SERP Volatility Sometimes Spike After a Competitor Publishes Content?
AWhen a competitor active in the same niche publishes new content, Google tests it in the SERPs against pages providing similar services and products. Your rankings might temporarily drop, but in essence, this should be looked at as a sign of healthy market competition. The problem, however, is that with the introduction of the AI overviews, these reassessments of indexable content are happening with increased frequency, and it’s not uncommon to see SERP ranking modifications happening on an hour-to-hour basis.
5) What Is the Difference Between Normal and Abnormal SERP Volatility?
ATypically, normal SERP volatility involves incremental position changes across only a few keywords and in most cases, the ranking modifications resolve quickly. Abnormal volatility, however, involves significant drops in rankings that last for more than a couple of days. Did one of your competitors change place with your website on the first page of search engine results? Then, that can be considered normal volatility. But if you dropped from the first page in the SERPs to the fifth, something is not right.
