Why Google Rebranded Data Studio to Looker Studio
Well, to make it short, it was more of a marketing ploy to make Google Data Studio align more closely with the other cloud analytical tools existing in Google’s current ecosystem. Google acquired Looker, a cloud-based BI platform focused on advanced data modeling, in June of 2019, for no less than $2.6 billion, and the rebranding of the Data Studio tool only happened three years later, in October of 2022. It wasn’t a product overhaul, per se. After all, the BI platform still largely maintained the same layout and design language. Instead, it was a push by Google to make Data Studio more impactful for enterprise-level data workflows.
Core Features at A Glance
As a comprehensive data-visualization platform, Google Data Studio connects to more than 800 different sources, and links to both databases, like MySQL, spreadsheets such as, well, Google Sheets, Google proprietary tools such as GSC, or even third-party SEO suites like Ahrefs. The Google Data Studio dashboard can combine the informational data from these sources into a singular, interpretable view, be used to design customizable dashboards, and share the reports developed via the gathered data to clients or internal staffers who can edit or view the presented information, per your requests.

Who Should Use the Google Data Studio?
First of all, the application made by Google is primarily useful to marketers who can use it to analyze KPI’s like CTRs, in real-time, and track campaign progress across multiple digital channels. But, at the same time, Google Data Studio can be useful for data and business analysts, which can utilize the informational data received from multiple sources to gain deeper insights about the profitability forecast of specific companies. Therefore, they could use the data studio to gather the required metrics and KPIs for specific business-related decision-making.
Not least, the Google Data Studio can also be extremely useful for marketing agencies, who can use it to automate reporting, and for specialists in search engine optimization services, like us, who can make use of it to monitor keyword performance and connect directly either to external SEO tools like SEMrush or to Google Analytics and the GSC.

Getting Started: How to Use Google Data Studio?
Creating Your First Dashboard
SEO Overview Dashboard
So, you’ve decided to bite the bullet and leverage our integrative SEO services in order to increase your site’s SERP presence. Congratulations, you’ve made a fantastic choice. In order to take full advantage of the Google Data Studio suite, our team will first and foremost need to set up your account, connect your data sources, and then, of course, add the first key charts and filters for the development of custom dashboards. How will we do all this? Well, let’s start from the beginning.
We will need to head to the Google Data Studio website and log in with your account. Then, we will click on Blank Report and link your account to a connector, like GSC or Google Analytics. Once we have selected the site’s correct dataset and added these properties to the report, we will want to click on Insert, drag the chart onto the canvas, customize the dimensions of the chart, and then style the dashboard in any way we see fit.
We can click on Filters and go to Filter Control in order to enhance the interactivity of the dashboard, add multiple pages for structuring reporting, and also click on Share in order to invite external collaborators to visualize the data. Likewise, the data can be embedded or even exported to PDF. A data-driven Google Data Studio dashboard, in the context of the E-E-A-T framework, can become a visual proof of ongoing technical expertise and can make your digital marketing strategies more easily integrate with Google’s algorithmic selection criteria.

How to Add Your First Data Source in the Google Data Studio?
After we linked your Google account to the Looker Studio suite, you will want to go to the application’s home screen, click on Blank Report, and then select the Add Data option that appears as a pop-up. You can then add connectors from third-party applications, such as separate SEO tools, or from first-party Google applications like the Search Console. Let’s say, for this example, that you have selected Google Analytics as a connector. In this case, you will need to press the account you want to, well, link, and then press on the Connect tab.
You will be presented with a quick preview of the connectors’ metrics, and then, you will need to click on Add to Report. Technically, that’s pretty much it. Your data source is now connected. Do you want to edit which analytics appear in the dashboard? Then, you need to select the chart you want to modify, click on the Properties panel, and click on Data. You will want to select the Dimensions you want to modify, and then the Metrics, which, in the Google Analytics case, can be anything from Engagement Rate to Bounce Rate. It’s quite straightforward, even if at first it can be quite daunting.
How to Choose Between Templates and Custom Builds?
Split-screen Template vs Custom Build
One of the biggest advantages of Google Data Studio is that it features built-in templates, some of which were distributed and designed by the community. The built-in templates available in the Google Data Studio are easy to set up and they can allow you to connect your data in mere seconds, with no costs involved and with minimal digital knowledge.
The templates available on the Looker Studio website are free to use, and they come pre-configured for popular data sources, such as Google Ads. Additionally, they are perfect for the visualization of standard metrics. Custom builds, however, allow for more tailored analytics, they are better for the creation of client-specific reports, and they are more scalable, which is probably necessary, as your business, in the best-case scenario, will grow exponentially in the next couple of months.
Are you dealing with a medium workflow, and are the built-in templates enough for your data visualization requirements? Then, it probably doesn’t make sense to invest time and money into custom builds. After all, the costs associated with custom templates can get quite steep. But depending on the circumstances, paid Google Data Studio templates can result in an ROI that will make their costs justified.
Data Platform Vs. Dataset Vs. Connector
In Google Data Studio, the data platform is the original source of the informational data feed in the application’s dashboard. To use a metaphor, it’s the main river from which small streams originate. These data sources could be pretty much anything, as Google Data Studio has access to around eight hundred of them. BigQuery, for example, stores big tables of data, while other connectors, like Google Ad, store the performance of your PPC strategies. Each source will have access to a particular set of data, and via Google Data Studio, you can combine all this data into an interface that can make all this jumbled mess into a decipherable system.
So, we have established what a data source is. But what about a dataset? Well, in the context of Google Data Studio utilization, a dataset is represented by the collection of informational data that’s extracted from the data platform. In Google Sheets, that could represent a particular numeric file. In the Excel connector, that can mean a CSV document, while in BigQuery, it can be, for example, a table. The dataset is the actual, relevant, informational data you want to use when developing the Google Data Studio chart.
The connector, on the other hand, you can think of as the bridge that moves the informational data from the initial platform into the Google Data Studio. The connector does not store data. Instead, it’s a pipeline that transfers the data from the original data platform to the dashboards you have created in the Google Data Studio. The first-party connectors available on the Data Studio website officially link to services like Google Ads, Google Sheets, or YouTube analytics. However, in 2026, there are also countless third-party connectors that link to non-Google data. The catch? In some cases, these connectors are paywalled.
What Is Data Blending and Why Does It Matter?
In the simplest of terms, data blending, in the Google Data Studio, is the process by which you can combine multiple informational data sources into a single chart/datasheet that will be either editable or sharable directly from the application’s main tab. In other words, think of data bleeding as a way to combine two different data streams in a singular package. Instead of visualizing them separately, this data will be presented to you in the same visual tab, which should technically contribute massively to the simplification of the processes you’re looking to implement.
Why does it matter? Well, just imagine this scenario. One of your sources comes from GA4, while the other one comes from ads. Let’s say you want to visualize how many people visited your website in one day, while also determining how many of these people contributed to a rise in PPC conversions. Without blending, you would have needed to investigate this data separately in each of the platform’s applications. With blending, however, you can view the informational data that interests you in the same graph, which is a time saver.
When to Use Blending Vs. BigQuery
GA4 + GSC Blended Dashboard
BigQuery is Google’s analytics warehouse. You can pretty much think of it like a petabyte-sized database that offers scalable analytics over large, and frankly, hard to compute, quantities of digital data. In Google Data Studio, you would use BigQuery when you have datasets spanning millions or billions of rows, when you need data transformations that Google Data Studio cannot handle, or if you require programmatic control with Structured Query Language. At the same time, in the Google Data Studio, you can make use of BigQuery to handle real-time data from GA4, run SQL on the GB-TB scale, and join multiple tables without relying on Looker Studio blending.
Data blending, on the other hand, is useful for small to medium-sized datasets, with fewer than a thousand rows. So, our team can make use of it to combine a maximum of five data sources per dashboard. Data blending is typically utilized for surface-level metrics, and it requires no coding, thus making it easy to set up. For SEO reports across GA4, data blending is enough. But if you want to leverage a more massive dataset and you need something compatible and fully flexible with SQL, BigQuery is the way to go. Both options are available in Google Data Studio, but BigQuery, for the most part, will require advanced SQL knowledge to deploy.
What Are Some Common Blending Mistakes in Google Data Studio?
Mistakes in Google Data Studio
No matter how well you think you know your SEO procedures and how familiar you are with Google Data Studio, chances are, at some point, you will make a couple of mistakes that will at least somewhat impact your overall productivity. It happens to everyone, but the important thing is to know what to look for and not let these setbacks affect the efficiency of your implemented digital marketing procedures. What should you look out for? For one thing, you need to pay attention to the overall format of the join keys and ensure they are identically formatted across all the sources you utilize.
Let’s say you try to unite two different sources that utilize a different time format: the American one, in which months are written in front of the weekdays, and the European one, in which the month is written behind the current date. If you don’t pay attention, your blending charts could show fewer rows than expected or even drop important data, which will result in inaccurate metrics. Another thing to pay attention to is duplicated records. If the join key is not unique, blending could duplicate your records, which in turn will result in overly-inflated metrics. Sure, you want to see a doubling of your CTRs. But you want it to be genuine.
Lastly, blending multiple sources, especially large datasets, can impact rendering times or even break your dashboard, which will spew out a “slow responsiveness” error message. Blending, in Google Data Studio, happens in the report layer, and each load request necessitates the reloading of previously rendered data. It’s not a perfect system, and in some cases, the dashboard can become sluggish. Granted, Google Data Studio limits the number of datasets you can blend, which should at least minimize the maximum resource expenditure.
Common Issues & Troubleshooting in Google Data Studio
Issues & Troubleshooting in Google Data Studio
Slow Dashboards:
One of the most frustrating issues you can encounter in the Google Data Studio is a dashboard that loads slower than you are comfortable with. Dashboards, in Looker Studio, can often feel slow due to excessive visualizations, too many calculations, or issues that relate to the initial data source. Is the main problem you’re experiencing caused by a large dataset that’s not suitable for your current dashboard configuration? In that case, our experts can do a couple of things to fix the issue.
For starters, we can use the Extract Data Studio Source function in order to take periodic snapshots of your data, instead of waiting for it to query live. Secondly, we can push filters directly at the source of the data, so in SQL, for example, rather than dealing with these filters directly in Google Data Studio. Sure, it’s convenient to do so for small datasets, but for large ones? Importing only the data you require is a better choice. Not least, we could pre-aggregate the data in the source and thus avoid blending too many large tables at once.
Missing Fields:
Missing fields are one of the easiest-to-miss issues in the Google Data Studio. However, the consequences for the long-term implementation of your digital efforts can, unfortunately, be substantial. Did the charts fail to render properly? Did the calculations break? Are you experiencing multiple performance issues in the Google Data Studio? Alright, so it’s time for our staff to take action. We will open your data source in the Google Data Studio and manually verify if all the required chart fields are checked and indexable. At the same time, we can utilize safe functions like SAFE_DIVIDE(x, y) in SQL, or IFNULL(Field, “N/A”) for optional or text-dependent fields.
Do you know how sometimes computers fix themselves after a restart? Well, in some cases, it happens the same with the Google Data Studio. Reconnecting the data source can sometimes fix problems with missing charts. Likewise, if the chart is only occasionally missing a field, we can add the IFNULL(Revenue, 0) function in SQL, which can be used to replace missing values with specific ones.
Misaligned Metrics:
Misaligned metrics, in Google Data Studio, happen when the unit or aggregation of the specific metric that interests you doesn’t match across your blended data. Why is this problematic? Well, it’s quite obvious, isn’t it? If you try to match units that utilize different scales, then you will get inaccurate comparisons and also filter inconsistencies that can make it hard to pinpoint the exact cause of the chart confusion.
How to fix it? First of all, we will need to convert all the metrics to the same unit, long before we leverage them in the data studio dashboard. For example, are you trying to understand the revenue metrics of your website? Then, we will need to make sure your sources utilize the same decimal form. Likewise, we will ensure all the metrics used in the data studio chart make use of the same aggregation levels, we will add a secondary axis in order to minimize the effect of visual misinterpretations, and we will adjust granularity by aligning the time dimension.
