The everlasting knight of the spam war stroke again: Google ran a comprehensive update this fall to detect spammy content. More community members reported spam pages, especially in some fancy languages like Turkish, Vietnamese, Chinese, Indonesian, and others. So, now the antispam system has become more robust and efficient to offer the best experience for Google’s users who browse the internet.

Yeah, it was the right time for a change, as many users reported more and more spam pages in their search results, including cloaking or auto-generated content with zero value for visitors. According to Google-released information, the incident started on the 4th of October and ended on the 19th of October in the late evening. It rolled out universally, all pages involved, no matter the locations. But even if this is a worldwide implication, the percentage of pages analyzed is not public.
The two weeks of system antispam update came after a year-long waiting, as the previous spam update ran in October 2022. Meanwhile, various types of spam developed, like meaningless AI-generated content, bringing no value to visitors. Also, the auto-generated translations of this content were considered spam and were penalized.
Let’s put on a short list of the most unwanted practices that Google and its systems are haunting on web pages:
- On some pages, links or content are hidden from the visitor but visible to the search engine. This type of content is highly likely to be penalized.
- Scraping some large-scale articles is again a big no for Google and its fighters. So, stay away from this kind of practice.
- As mentioned before, this update centers on the user experience. Not only security and privacy were the aim of these antispam filters, but also pleasant surfing; so, large ads distracting from the page content were considered spammy this time.
- Affiliation is good as long as it is done right! But poor content pages akin mainly to monetization are now considered to bring less value for the visitors. Because the content relevance is in the focus right now.

In this battle combat, Google enrolled both humans and robots. Its AI machine learning, SpamBrain, was used to find spam content better. The reviews made by humans led to cleaner content and a better internet.
The periodic release of these updates helps Google to stay ahead with its antispam system and offer its users a better experience while surfing the webpages, protecting their data and preventing them from being scammed by accessing malware content. So, once in several months, a new update is planned to help Google find and eliminate malware content and unethical SEO.
The help of its users is very appreciated and credited by Google, so everyone who sends spam reports is enjoying the benefits from the company for his efforts.
Page owners should check the new Google security and privacy rules to ensure their pages comply with the new policies. Sometimes, the new spam filters may conflict with some content, so changes are necessary. Volatility is a natural effect after these updates, as raking changes due to better or worse content are detected within a period. If you ranked lower, the cause may be better content or your competitors, not necessarily because your page’s content was penalized. For this reason, seeking to update your content must be a constant practice.
This constant battle against spam content has become a priority for Google, and it is looking forward to becoming more robust and wiser through its tools and systems. It uses the newest technology and is working on developing an even better one.
The results of two weeks of search indexing are coming out, but other chances may happen in the next period. Google encourages continuous feedback through its reporting tool. Many users are commenting about the update, considering that after the incident, things are cleaner, and many spammy pages have gone! Some others believe that some pages are still penalized for no reason. Some healthcare pages rank lower, and their content was marked as generated by AI tools. Some others may show plagiarized content from other top-ranked sites in the medical area.
When considering the strategy of your SEO plan, the content should be a priority. Honest and transparent practices are only accepted by Google, and sites must provide users with a good experience in all aspects.
Sometimes, creating intelligent and engaging content for your pages may seem complicated, but certainly, you will be thankful later.
