So, what is SEO visibility? It’s how often your users see your site online. A higher rating in the SERPs means your pages will benefit from more organic traffic, which in the SEO world is the most valuable thing, as organic site visitors are the most likely to interact with your services and products and lead to enhanced.
SEO Visibility and Rankings: What’s The Difference?
In short, rankings refer to the position that a website has in the SERPs for a specific set of keywords. In practice, let’s assume you are a business that sells custom-made candy, and you are looking to improve the visibility of your pages to the keyword: “custom candy near me.” Your page’s position in search engine results when users submit this query will be your SEO ranking.
SEO visibility, on the other hand, is a more well-rounded SEO performance metric that measures how visible your entire website is in the SERPs, across all tracked keywords. SERP visibility doesn’t just calculate the specific rank for particular keywords, but calculates the overall presence of your pages in the search engine results by taking into account search volume, CTRs, relative search volume and competitor performance. Search visibility can be calculated with the help of tools such as Ahrefs or Moz. That said, it’s more often determined after the implementation of an SEO audit.
What About Impressions?
SEO impressions and search results overview
In the context of search visibility, SEO impressions are how often pages from your website appeared in Google search results for specific user queries, regardless of whether the person clicked on your site or not. In other words, it’s the total appearances of your site’s URLs in the SERPs, without focusing on specific keywords. Fifty appearances in the SERPs for various queries will, at the end of the day, count as fifty impressions.
This metric can be tracked with tools such as GSC, and it can be improved, among other things, via the local SEO services provided by our agency. Our agents will optimize your GBP profile by updating your NAP information, we will develop a consistent content creation strategy that makes use of the keywords identified during the audit phase of the SEO process, and we will build citations from businesses relevant to the specific services commercialized on your website. All these actions should help boost your search visibility and make it easier for target customers to differentiate your website in search results.
But what is the difference between SEO visibility and impressions? Think of it this way. Impressions are your raw exposure in the SERPs and focus on the total appearances of your URLs, for all queries, regardless of keywords. Search visibility, on the other hand, is more involved, and combines ranking positions with keyword search volume and CTR estimates. Likewise, while ranking in search results tells the position of a specific page for a specific keyword, impressions aggregate all appearances of your page in SERPs, regardless of keywords. Search rankings, especially in the context of the AI boom, must be constantly tracked. And our team can help you with this.
Why Is SEO Visibility Important for Revenue?
SEO Growth and success elements
This one is quite easy to answer. The more visibility your pages have, the more organic traffic you will experience on your website. What do we mean by organic traffic? Unpaid visits to your pages, via search results, from users who are likely to interact with your offers, not because they stumbled upon them accidentally, but because they have searched for products and services like the ones you offer.
More visibility in Google search results means you will appear more often in relevant searches. This, in turn, will make it so that more users with clear intent are finding your site. Higher SERP positions are correlated with more CTRs and increased brand reputation. In fact, in the SERPs, 96% of desktop clicks happen in the top ten results.
Visibility across transactional and high-intent keywords is associated with a direct impact on revenue retention, and unlike with other marketing approaches, such as PPC, search visibility in SEO compounds and thus continues attracting new clients, even with marginal costs associated with the implemented technical and on-page modifications. Plus, in SEO, even a simple link-building proposal can have a tremendous impact on search engine visibility.

How Is SEO Visibility Calculated?
SEO Visibility Score Explained
What is SEO visibility? The measure of your website’s SERP presence. But it’s also more than that. At its core, SEO visibility is not a Google-based metric, but rather it’s an estimate utilized by external SEO tools, such as Ahrefs and SEMrush, to quantify how visible a website is in search results. So, what is SEO visibility? Well, at its core, search engine visibility is a collection of different SEO metrics utilized in order to determine how often your website appears in relevant queries. There are two ways to think about SEO visibility: In terms of practical, measurable formulas and in terms of conceptual visibility.
For tool-based search visibility, the simplified formula for calculating it is as follows: Visibility = X, in which X represents the total search volume multiplied by the CTR by ranking position. In order to calculate the specific visibility of a website with a specific formula, you will need to know the search volume per specific keyword, the ranking position for each of them, and, of course, identify the keywords you want to target in the first place.
A visibility score of 0% means you have zero links present in the first twenty spots in the SERPs. A score of 100% means you will score for all the ranking positions for your specific keyword, which is almost impossible to do. In reality, it’s hard to obtain a score above 40% for non-branded keywords, but nevertheless, getting close to this value should bring a substantial increase in CTRs.

How SEMrush and Ahrefs Calculate Visibility?
Surprisingly, they do it in different ways. SEMrush calculates search visibility as a percentage inside position tracking, and the formula they use is CTR by position multiplied by the keyword importance. The visibility is therefore relative to the tracked keyword. With Ahrefs, however, search visibility is equal to the estimation of the total possible clicks. Ahrefs utilizes not just domains, but actual page ranking URLs to determine SEO visibility, as well as SERP features impact, such as the influence of featured snippets, and an estimation of CTR by position. In other words, with Ahrefs, visibility is click-shared-based, not a fixed percentage, and the impact of SERP features is already factored in.
SEMrush and Ahrefs Calculate Visibility
You can, if you want, think of it like this: With SEMrush, you can learn how visible you already are for keywords relevant to the services and products you sell. With Ahrefs, on the other hand, you can determine how many clicks you can realistically attract via organic search. Both utilize a formula that multiplies search rankings with volume and CTR.
That said, with SEMrush, you can determine comparative visibility, while with Ahrefs, you are more focused on click-weighted visibility. SEMrush is therefore suitable for determining KPIs, while Ahrefs is more useful for growth modeling. Both programs, however, are great for finding the right avenues for improving organic search rankings and determining the page speeds elements that influenced your site’s SERP positioning.

Why SEO Visibility Doesn’t Always Equate to Traffic Growth?
As we’ve already said, search visibility is a metric that showcases how often your site appears in the search results, for specific keywords, when they are weighted by their search volume and position. Organic traffic is the number of visitors who accessed your site from search engines. It would make sense then for higher SEO visibility to automatically lead to an equal increase in organic traffic, right? Well, there will be a growth, sure. But it might not be linear.
The problem is that even if a website achieves good SEO visibility and it’s present in the first twenty SERP results with multiple links, the CTRs drop sharply after you go outside of the top five results. The first position in the SERPs, for example, has a CTR of no less than 39.8%. Meanwhile, the second site in the SERP list has a CTR of 18.7%, while the link in third position has a CTR of 10%.
That’s almost 4 times the difference in only the first three SERP results. A site can be visible in dozens of different queries and rank, in the first SERP page for multiple different keywords. But as long as it is not present in the top-most results, the organic CTRs might remain modest regardless of whether the search engine visibility score in Ahrefs and SEMrush is strong.
What Are Some Key Factors That Influence SEO Visibility?
Keyword Coverage and Topical Authority
Keyword research and SEO authority
What is SEO visibility if not a collection of the relevant queries for which your website can rank? Keyword coverage means encompassing both the keyword with increased relevance for the queries of potential core customers and developing a content creation blueprint that showcases your authority in the subject matters expressed and relevant for the keywords you target. This matters because search visibility is directly tied to how well your website follows the E-A-A-T frameworks and the CWVs.
You can’t have one without the other. In order to facilitate your presence in search results and enhance search visibility, you will need to focus on improving page speeds and on enhancing your page’s authority score. Our team can help by utilizing semantic keywords in the created content, performing topic clustering, and, of course, leveraging long-tail keywords. As for improving your page speeds, we could focus on CWVs and minimize the usage of media elements on specific topics.
Search Intent Alignment
This refers to how well your content aligns with the informational, transactional, navigational, or perhaps even commercial intent behind specific queries. In other words, how relevant you are to potential site visitors. This matters because even if you manage to achieve a good position in the SERPs for a specific keyword, and your search visibility score is decent, if you don’t provide the information that the user is looking for, your CTRs will remain low. To help align your content with the intent of specific queries, our team will include CTAs when developing the content creation blueprint and will tailor content format based on the intent gathered from specific keywords.
Backlinks And Internal Links
SEO strategy with links and icons
Internal links make it easier for search engine crawlers to index the pages existing on your website, while backlinks, from authoritative websites, with enhanced trust signals, remain, even in 2026, a way for websites to judge the relevancy of indexable content for specific queries and thus increase your search visibility. The latest core updates have somewhat reduced the importance of backlinks as a ranking factor, that’s true.
But external links are still an important part of the strategies required to improve search engine visibility. Our team can optimize your internal links by implementing a logical hierarchy from pillar pages to cluster content, and for backlinks, we can utilize our experience and reach out to industry-relevant websites in search of link-building collaborations.
With a proper content creation strategy, improvements in search results should be expected. However, how long you’ll have to wait till SERP modifications become visible will depend on the previous search engine visibility of your pages and, of course, what competition exists for targeted keywords.
