The world of the web is very rewarding, yet it is also full of potential risks. There are many things you can get out of the experience and there are many ways through which you can expand your business, but there are also a few things you must keep in mind. One of the threats you can think of is hackers and their impact on your web presence.
They are some of the most popular threats people know about over the web, yet most of the time the victims are not even aware of what is happening. The main issue with this is that the average users are not aware of the things that can happen and what they can do. Most of the time, they are afraid they will lose financial details or files from a PC.
If you own a website, one of the main things you have to worry about when it comes to hackers is that they will use it in order to gain traffic or other benefits. With a few simple additions that you might not be aware of, they will use your site in order to redirect your visitors to their own sites and you will lose credibility and traffic in the process.
Tasks You Should do for a Small Website
One of the first things you should do is check your site for any URLs that you may not know since these are the ones they use in order to redirect traffic. Google is the first tool that will help you perform this search and you can also use its Alert option to keep you informed whether there have been any suspicious keywords detected on your site.
The search queries performed on search engines are the ones that should also get your attention. If you are going to see any unexpected queries that have returned your URLs, you can be sure this is a result of the hacked content. One of the things you have to know is that you do not mistake queries from other languages, since they are not the same.
The Google Webmaster Tools are also very useful in detecting suspicious things that may be going on with your site and you will be notified in the message center. If you want to be sure you will be notified in due time, you can select to forward these messages to an email you check frequently. They may point to a few things you may have missed.
If you want to fix these issues and you want to prevent them from happening, you have to stay up to date at all times. The software running your site is one of the first on the list, the site management tool can also offer security checks so their latest updates can be useful, and so on, but the latest updates from Webmaster Tools can also provide a few details. If you want to learn more about what you can do, the Google Webmaster Central blog can help you with it.
