The web offers a wide range of opportunities you can make the most of, but it will also expose you to a great deal of risks. Things are not running only in one direction online and you have to be sure you will keep an eye out for the ones that can treat your wrong. Even if you are honest and you want to use the web properly, not all are the same.
You put in the effort to build a site that will get you closer to your audience. You take the time to write a few articles so you can show off with what you can do and what you know. After you put in all that effort, others come along and they copy some of your content on their site. What would you expect to happen as soon as Google will see this?
One of the first thoughts that cross your mind is for the site that stole your content to be at the bottom of the list in the queries of the users. As long as they copied even one sentence that you worked for, they should be knocked down from the rankings and you should always be on top of them. But what if this is not the outcome you see in the end?
Rank better in Google
To your surprise, Google has a number of terms set to benefit the user, but there are times when you have to give in. One of the first things you should know is that copying a few paragraphs from your site and not the entire page, will not affect their ranking. You may be the author of the content, but others have used it to rank better in Google.
One of the main issues you will have to deal with is that your rankings will drop and the people who will try to find your content will be snatched by others. Once this happens, you will lose a great deal of traffic and so you will not be able to enjoy the benefits the web has to offer. But why are those sites ranked better if they are using your content?
One of the criteria used by Google to rank sites is the freshness of the content. The site that will post the content at a later date is the one that will rank better. Since you are the author, you have the oldest content of them all. This is one of the issues you will have to deal with. On top of that, the ones that copied the site will not be penalized in any way.
As long as they will use only a few paragraphs, they are able to claim fair use and Google will not have any issues with it in the end. You are not the only one who is going through such problems. If you want to see what others have to say about this and what solutions they choose, you should visit the forum at Webmaster World for this task.
