What Are AI Search Rankings (And Why They Matter Now)
From Keywords to AI models: How Ranking Logic Changed
AI search rankings are a new way for AI-powered search engines like Google’s SGE to display content inside AI-generated results developed by linking together multiple digital sources with a clear semantic connection between them. AI search rankings do not work like traditional SERP results. You will no longer fight to rank for top ten standings in the first page in the SERP, but rather you will try to achieve the backend connections required in order to appear in the results or AI-citations generated by AI models. How to track AI search rankings? Well, we will first need to understand what’s changed compared to the older days in which keywords ruled conventional digital marketing practices.
Back in the day, content quality algorithms like Google Panda primarily emphasized the number of quality keywords listed in the indexable content and the number of authoritative backlinks connecting websites to domains with a high DA rating. It was less about contextual understanding and more about the creation of a structured framework that was just starting to follow the basic principles that later would become the E-E-A-T guidelines. But the expansion of indexable Google results and modifications in the general search patterns of online users pushed search engines to utilize ML-based search models like BERT, which concentrated more on the semantic relevance of indexable content.
In 2025, AI search rankings are intertwined with the AI models of search engines. Optimizing for generative results and Google AI Overviews is now equally as important as leveraging a content-creation framework that follows the E-E-A-T guidelines. Moreover, algorithm updates like the December 2024 and March 2025 core updates have strengthened the signals surrounding content authority and propelled the importance of content mapping via “multi-vector” embeddings.

The Difference Between SEO and GEO
SEO is the practice of optimizing your site’s on-page, off-page and backend data for both the crawling agents leveraged by conventional search engines, as well as for the subjective requirements of core audiences. In a conventional, white label SEO strategy, the goal is to optimize your site’s pages for specific queries, increase your content’s organic indexability via backend modifications, and make use of backlinks and keywords in order to improve SERP rankings. NLP modules such as BERT do play a role in website optimization, as content semantics have increased in importance as a ranking factor in the last couple of years.
To improve visibility in search results, we will need to implement schema markup in the HTML of your pages via JSON-LD, make sure your backend data falls in line with the CWVs, and that your site’s UX is compatible with your customers’ demands. But AI search visibility and SEO were not really a match until one or two years ago. Generative search engine optimization is the process of optimizing your content and brand signals for citations and references in AI-powered results for system’s like SGE or Google’s Gemini. The core technologies behind GMO are AI-based LLMs, vector databases and NLP systems that can integrate multiple results into singular answers.
While the core tracking mechanics of website optimization focus on keywords, backend quality and occasional backlinks, in AI-focused GMO the focus is on semantic embeddings, the expansion of contextual indexing signals, such as trust vectors and on achieving multimodal consistency via the implementation of schema markup. AI search engines rank sources and determine AI search visibility not by keywords, but by determining the semantic relevancy of semantically encoded texts. So, in other words, in GMO, the AI systems generate the results and determine their factual relevance.
How to Optimize for AI Overviews and Improve AI Search Visibility in Google?
Google AI Overviews Image
One of the first things our search engine optimization experts will do is to structure your content into a framework that can be easily parsed by the algorithms of AI-based search engines. In order to increase AI search visibility, obtain tangible results and track AI search rankings, our team will implement schema markup in the HTML of your pages, check your content’s heading hierarchy and leverage short paragraphs and bullet points, which are more easily retrievable and thus visible for crawling bots.
Abstract content is more human, and in some cases, it can be interpreted by a conventional search engine as an authority signal, as unstructured text is unlikely to be written with the help of AI. That said, at least for AI Overviews, the crawling agents utilized by AI models prefer clean and structured content that provides direct results to specific queries. The more structured your texts are, the more likely they are to be directly referenced in AI Overviews and positively contribute to AI search visibility. On top of modifying the structure of your content, our team will also ensure that your already indexed texts fall in line with the E-A-A-T guidelines.
AI Citations, author credentials, backlinks to websites with high DA, and structured trust elements like SSL certificates all work together to increase your content’s tracking in AI Overviews and thus lead to tangible results for AI search visibility enhancements. Not least, AI models typically only utilize data sets obtained from recently updated informational sources. Do you want to get referenced in AI Overviews, improve your SERP standing in Google, and obtain tangible results for the implemented GEO strategies? In that case, we will need to update your old content, re-optimize your informational data for semantic coverage, and recheck your page’s utilization of canonical tags.

Tracking Metrics
Unlike with a conventional digital marketing strategy, AI visibility tracking primarily focuses on determining the presence and influence of your content’s citations in the AI results. SERP positioning, in AI search rankings is less relevant, as users can often encounter the information present in your pages without even being presented with a URL to your site. What are some metrics we can monitor? For one thing, our outsourced services can be utilized to determine the frequency of your AI citations, which is how often your brand is explicitly referenced in the AI-generated results of the AI-search system.
To determine your AI citations frequency, our team’s AI visibility audit services will leverage tools like SGE Radar or manually record the results appearing in Google’s SGE or Microsoft’s Copilot. Besides this, we could use manual AI prompt testing to establish a baseline of your AI mentions, which are references to the content present in your pages, without a direct source to your website. Likewise, we will use the AI Overviews features now included in tools like Ahrefs and SEMrush to establish whether your website is among the linked sources in AI results, and determine the semantic recall of your pages for specific AI-generated search results.

AI search systems do not work like conventional search engines, and therefore, determining the KPIs of GEO is more complicated than with conventional website optimization. In GEO, there is no fixed ranking system like with SEO and the SERPs. Plus, in GEO, at least as of 2025, it is almost impossible to know for certain how the content on your site was used in the generation of AI results. For now, AI is a closed ecosystem, and AI visibility tracking is more dynamic than what’s applicable with conventional SERP-focused approaches.
How Do AI Models Pick Content Sources and Influence Google AI Overviews?
When you submit a query within an AI-assisted search system like Google’s Gemini, the AI model first converts your text input into a semantic, vector-based embedding, which will allow the algorithms of the search system to understand the relation between the topics presented in your query and not just focus on keywords, as was typically the case with a conventional search. The goal is to understand the intent of the user, and once this is achieved, the search system will make use of the RAG AI framework combined with the AI models’ real-time index in order to find sources relevant to the user’s query.
To find sources with close semantic relevance for the user’s demands, the AI search system will leverage AI-driven ranking signals such as the E-A-A-T framework utilized by Google, also for conventional SERP-based rankings and run an AI credibility scoring process that will involve separate authority and relevancy vectors. Once the AI impressions-gathering systems find around fifty to one hundred sources for the generation of AI Overviews, they will utilize AI-based fact-checking submodules that will cross-reference the informational data selected in the previous step. The goal is to trace back the data presented in the generated answer to reduce the impact of AI hallucinations.
For the answer generation, the search module will not just copy and paste the information presented on one website. Instead, it will synthesize what it found on multiple sources, submit external references, and create a summary of the semantic information indexed before, with the help of a complex AI algorithm. Does this sound complicated? Well, it is, and for website optimization, this whole process means a greater focus on AI trust vectors, such as the inclusion of metadata and a reduction in backlinks at the detriment of semantically relevant keywords.
Emerging Software for AI Overviews Checks:
In the context of AI-generated search results, the practical benefits of the backend modifications required to attain search visibility in AI Overviews will often be hard to properly evaluate, at least without the help of SGE/AI monitoring tools. Sure, it is possible to perform online checks without utilizing GEO tools, and as we will enunciate later on, such an approach has its own distinct advantages. But, AI-assisted GEO tools have become the norm for present-day digital optimization strategies. Are you looking for some professional SERP tracking programs that can provide more context about the AI search ranking of your indexed data? Then the following options should be a good starting point for an in-depth GEO strategy.
Nozzle:
Nozzle – AI Visibility Report Illustrative
Nozzle is an AI-based SERP rank tracking tool that, for AI-generated search results, can be utilized to track AI search rankings, extract SERP KPIs like citations and mentions, and also monitor your site’s prompt frequency. Nozzle can be utilized for tracking entities; in a conventional website optimization setting, it can be leveraged for keyword ranking, and it can also determine how often your URLs appear in the citations of prime-level AI models. In other words, Nozzle, at its most basic settings, can be used to view historical featured snippets data and capture continuous SERP info, which will be timestamped.
And that’s a big deal, as often, with AI search rankings, it is difficult to assess directly which sources were available when the AI agent has crawled your indexable content. Since Nozzle can be utilized for wide-scale SERP scraping, it will be possible to make snapshots of particular entries and thus investigate which indexed content is more visible to AI agents. These SERP snapshots could later be exported into a vector database and thus be utilized to determine if your dedicated content sources match the informational sets retrieved by the AI’s crawling agents. The result? More optimization for AI visibility.
MarketMuse:
MarketMuse – Topic Cluster Map Illustrative
MarketMuse is a powerful AI-powered complete content optimization platform that can be utilized by our professional team to 1) perform content research and 2) gain recommendations for subtopics that can later be leveraged in an AI-focused content creation strategy. In the context of GEO, MarketMuse can help us write and research content with complex topic semantic resonance to the text already indexed on your website, improve on your page’s topical authority, and develop content clusters that can send a strong expertise signal to search engine AI-powered crawlers. How is it different from Nozzle? Well, let’s compare them side by side.
While Nozzle is pretty much an AI-based search visibility tracking tool that can be leveraged to identify how your pages appear in AI results, MarketMuse focuses on the optimization of content that’s potentially indexable by search engine’s AI-focused crawling agents. So, you can think of it as a content optimizer tool that makes use of AI-driven content scoring algorithms to build on the semantic relevance of your indexable texts. In simpler terms, Nozzle can be utilized to see how your site appears in Google’s AI Overviews, while MarketMuse is a tool you can use to develop content that has a chance to appear in AI Overviews.
Surfer AI:
Surfer AI – Illustrative
Surfer AI is a content-writing tool built directly in the Surfer SEO platform that you can use for the creation of GEO-optimized articles that make use of specific keywords. It’s basically an AI-writer that makes use of the capabilities of the Surfer search engine optimization platform. For AI-generated search results, Surfer AI can build SERP optimized pages or tune already written drafts in order to comply with the quality thresholds of AI-assisted crawling bots. As for in-depth functions, Surfer AI features a content editor that permits users to determine the real-time scoring of a draft versus the top pages for a specific query. Moreover, it allows for inspection of competitor pages and its topic maps can be used alongside MarketMuse.
There are downsides, sure. Since its AI models use top-ranking websites in order to generate content ideas or optimize already-written drafts, the developed texts might feel formulaic, and with AI systems, there is always the risk of hallucinations. At its core, Surfer AI is a basic content-writing tool whose capabilities can be replicated with free chatbots like Google’s Gemini or Microsoft’s Copilot. But unlike them, Surfer AI analyzes live SERP data and develops already-optimized articles with a content score.
Surfer AI, unlike chatbots that can be utilized for the creation of general-purpose texts, will extract the most utilized keywords and subheadings of articles ranked on the first SERP page, and then generate articles based on your prompts that are designed to follow their structure. Should you let it fully automate your content creation strategy? Perhaps not, after all, manually-written content is still the way to go in the digital marketing sphere. But, realistically, Surfer AI can be a fantastic time saver and allow you to gain data-driven insights that can be used for the expansion of your copywriting capabilities.
Should You Go for Manual or Automated Checks for AI Overviews?
Are you interested in determining the AI visibility tracking of your already Google-indexed content and gaining a new understanding of AI search visibility parameters? Do you want to track AI search rankings? In that case, performing regular checks, automated or manual, that verify the utilization of specific prompts in the generation of AI Overviews, will be the only way to assess your content’s alignment with the parameters required for appearing in surface-level AI layers. In a GEO setting, checks for AI overview impressions are required in order to evaluate the authority and general quality of the contextual mentions present in the AI-generated responses.
Manual vs Automated Checks Comparison
Plus, these checks will be necessary in order to generate a complete mapping of the AI-based prompt coverage, verify if your site is even utilized as an informational source for AI Overviews, discover gaps in content indexability, and monitor or predict the performance of the implemented backend, SERP-focused site modifications. But what is better? Perform manual checks or rely on automated website optimization tools that can determine AI search rankings much faster? Well, if your goal is to track AI search rankings, the answer is somewhere in the middle.
Manual Checks for AI Overview Impressions:
If your goal is to gain a rich contextual understanding of the analyzed data and obtain insights about the ways AI impressions-gathering systems frame your brand, manual checks are probably the option to consider. How to track AI search rankings via manual AI visibility checks? It’s quite simple. Our team will search for your brand directly in Google’s SGE and determine if references to your content appear in AI Overviews. As of 2025, humans can interpret the contextual cues behind AI Overviews a bit better than automated tools, as more often than not, AI-generated snippets lack direct citations connecting the generated content with website’s indexable data.
In other words, our highly-skilled agents will track AI search rankings and should spot AI search visibility contextual cues that an AI-assisted tool will miss. Plus, manual reviews can better tell when the AI model is suffering from hallucinations, can be used to cross-verify the data sources present in the AI-Overviews, and can, of course, be a tool to judge the overall quality of the narrative surrounding your brand’s mentions. But, there are, of course, also downsides to manual checks. Number 1) They are time-consuming and impossible to scale for a wide-reaching GEO strategy. Number 2) The parameters of AI Overviews are, by definition, dynamic. Therefore, the data extracted via manual checks might no longer be relevant for the same queries, only a couple of days into the future.
Automated Checks for AI Overview Impressions:
Automated AI Overviews and GEO analysis tools like Nozzle are more convenient when it comes to scalability and long-term usability, as they can continuously track prompt frequency across extended keyword sets while also determining the total number of AI Overviews appearances and, of course, the source of the citations presented in the AI-based responses. AI-based crawlers can monitor hundreds or even thousands of parameters for AI Overviews and they are consistent, as they can evaluate ranking logic and the general behavior behind AI-citations with more speed and accuracy than humans.
Yes, manual checks are better for understanding the contextual cues behind selected results and determining the layering of specific prompts that result in AI Overviews. But, automated tools like Nozzle are better at identifying AI search visibility parameter shifts, can layer metrics such as AI citation density and prompt frequency into an integrated package and, they are cost-effective, as the monthly subscription of such tools will be more advantageous than paying for the labor hours of GEO specialists performing manual checks for AI Overviews.
Are there downsides? Yes, like with any AI-assisted tool. Automated AI impressions-gathering tools are better at identifying when the algorithmic search modules utilized for AI Overviews omit to cite your content. But they are unable to determine why this action happened. Moreover, since Google’s AI Overviews are inherently dynamic, the bots utilized by GEO tools for automated AI visibility tracking checks might lead to different results than what’s encountered by users. Are you interested in learning how to track AI search rankings? Then, you should consider a hybrid approach and rely on AI-driven automated checks for AI-visibility tracking at scale, while also performing manual checks in order to determine content accuracy and general contextual cues in AI Overviews.

Why Traditional Google SERPs No Longer Tell the Full Story?
With the latest modifications applicable to the digital marketing sphere, Google searches are no longer just query-powered, but they are also heavily influenced by the NLP algorithms leveraged by crawling agents. In a conventional SERP strategy, the efficiency of the implemented search engine optimization services is determined by the position of your website in the results page, and by CTRs. With AI standings, however, this logic no longer applies, because often, users will gain a clear understanding of their search queries without even seeing a link to click.
Google’s AI visibility tracking is harder to implement as queries in an AI setting are transformed into semantic embeddings, which don’t necessitate exact keywords for content matching. The result is that in GEO, AI search visibility is no longer tied to ranking position. AI results summarize information from multiple sources, often without displaying the source or the URL from which this information is gathered. Sure, your information sourced from your website can be utilized in the AI summary. But this is not a conventional SEO ranking method, and it will not necessarily have an effect on AI positioning.
How to track AI search rankings in Google? Well, our team of technicians specialized in outsourced services can start by monitoring content search visibility in Google AI Overviews for systems like Google’s Gemini and make use of specialized AI-focused tools like BrightEdge. But, the process will be opaque, as in conventional SERP monitoring, AI ranking models are multi-layered and utilize trust vectors and contextual cues for the matching of indexable content, which makes conventional metrics like keyword density and volume pretty much obsolete.
Common Mistakes When Optimizing for AI Overviews:
Mistakes When Optimizing for AI Overviews
Optimizing for AI Overviews is required for improving the credibility of your indexable content and start tracking your SERP performance via conventional KPIs. But if you make a mistake, the end results might be different from what you’ve expected and hurt your tracking and overall visibility in Google search results. What’s the first thing you should avoid? Over-optimizing with repetitive keywords. Like it’s the case in a conventional digital marketing strategy, keyword stuffing can reduce the natural flow of the content and make AI models ignore your pages when tracking for AI Overviews and Google search visibility.
Keyword frequency was pivotal during the Google Panda days. But in 2025, the core principle of AI-focused GEO strategies should be the semantic understanding of the indexable content. Repetitive keywords can confuse the crawling algorithms utilized by Google to assess tracking and search visibility and get you content flagged as spam. But that’s not the only mistake you can make. Do you focus solely on those pages cited in AI Overviews via direct URLs? Then, you make a mistake, as AI models like those leveraged by Google often mention brands in AI Overviews even when no links are provided.
We’ll use professional SEO tools to scan for non-cited mentions and audit AI Overviews tracking reports in order to ensure you are monitoring for full search visibility. Finally, one of the worst mistakes you can make is to fail to adapt your content for natural language prompts used for conversational queries. Misaligned prompts can drastically reduce your content’s tracking visibility and make you less likely to appear in Google AI search results. To avoid this issue, our team will analyze your tracking data for AI Overviews, utilize NLP terms more likely to lead to semantic matching, and structure your content for informational queries.
