Why It’s Important to Remove Unwanted Search Results

Negative Results Damage Trust and Conversion
If you want to protect your online reputation, you need to remove results from Google Search. Employers, business partners, or just people in general, all rely on Google search results to create an opinion about someone. If the search for your name or that of your business results in harmful or inaccurate information, it can create a false impression of you or your business. If the first results that shows up when someone searches your business is a bad review, or an article spreading misinformation about you, your credibility lowers immediately.
Unfortunately, many users tend to believe the first thing they see on Google Search results. Sometimes they don’t even read a review, but if they see that it’s just one star, they decide that something’s wrong with your business. Now you see why you need to hide unwanted results from Google search?
Impact On Personal and Business SEO
Unwanted Google search results could expose personal information, such as email or phone number. This could lead to you being the victim of a scam, or your business not being trusted anymore. You want Google Search to actually showcase who you are, not some old information that is misleading. If you applied for a job, and the first thing that pops up when the interviewer looks you up is a controversial opinion on your social media from high school, you might not get the job.

When someone puts in a search for your business, you probably want Google Search to show your official website and good reviews. Well, when unflattering search results show up first, you lose credibility and trust. Bad Google search results or bad media coverage will lower your website in results and your overall website authority. If your ranking is affected, the traffic and sales will be automatically affected too. Which is why you want to hide unwanted results from Google search. Or you might want to remove personal info from Google search for good.
How Outdated or False Results Harm Visibility
If both users and the search engine are fed misinformation about you, they will start believing it. Think of it like this, if the search engine ranks old information higher, your newer ones will rank lower. In time, this harms your overall visibility. This is exactly why you want to completely remove unwanted Google search results. If you want to build a good online reputation, you must pay attention and fix these kinds of problems before they actually become a problem.
Common Reasons for Removing Google Search Results
Legal and Privacy Violations
Your online reputation will be seriously affected if the Google search results contain any information that was illegally obtained, or is defamatory. For legal violations, everything from defamation to unlawful data sharing and copyright infringement must be eliminated. To remove unwanted Google search results means to comply with the law. As for the privacy violations, you want to remove any contact info or photos that were released without your consent. This helps with preventing potential harassment.
The action of removing results from Google Search is in no way hiding something, but rather about protecting yourself or your business. This kind of information can have a negative impact not only on your online reputation, but also on your real life. It appears that Google search results have moved offline in many ways.
Outdated or Inaccurate Data
As previously mentioned, an outdated email showing in Google search results might confuse customers. If they want to contact you and the only info they find is old, they will just give up. No one will search Google for other contact info, they will just choose to buy from another brand altogether. As for personal life, maybe an employer wants to contact you to hire you, but Google only shows them an old phone number. Remember this: if your life updates, your online presence also needs to be updated. So, you want to learn how to remove something from Google search results.
Unwanted Images, Videos, Or Reviews
Google search results might show some unwanted media or reviews when people look you or your business up. It doesn’t matter what those images or videos are, what matters is that you don’t want people to see them because they affect your online reputation. Your privacy and reputation might suffer if you don’t take action against the unwanted media or results on Google search. One inappropriate photo of you can overshadow all of the good you’ve done. You don’t want one search to prevent you from getting opportunities or even starting a business.
And if you want to start a business, you must understand early on that people care about the Google search results. You should check out this article by Forbes, talking about how ratings and reviews influence the decision of a buyer. Take yourself for example. When you want to buy something, you search for it and then check the Google reviews. If the first ones you see are bad, you won’t buy from that company. And why would you? You’ve just had three people telling you it’s bad. But if three people tell you it’s good, you might actually consider buying it.
Step-by-Step: How To Remove Results from Google Search

Step 1 – Contact The Website Owner
If you are wondering how to remove results from Google search, know that there is one easy option to try. Contact the website owner. Google search is not the one actually putting the information online, it just indexes content from other websites. So, if you find any unwanted content that you want to remove from Google search results, find the website that posted it, and contact the owner. Kindly ask them to remove the content, and explain why it’s harmful to you.
You can also ask them to edit or just update the information. Maybe your business is mentioned in a great article on Google, but you changed your website address. Just ask the owner to replace the old URL with the new one. This is the quickest and simplest option to protect your online reputation.
Step 2 – Submit a Legal Removal Request
If content on search results violates a law or infringes on your rights, you can submit a legal removal request. Google will then review the content and potentially remove it. Keep in mind that you must have a serious reason for this kind of request. If the content involves issues like privacy breaches, copyright infringement, defamation, non-consensual explicit photos or harassment, Google will take it down. This action will create an official report of your complaint, in case you need to prove it in a real courtroom. You should never allow anyone to harm you, not on Google results or offline.

Google Removal Tools
Google has a tool that is specifically created to help you remove outdated content. It’s used to remove any Google search page that no longer exists or for information that is outdated. If you want to use this Google tool, you need to start by logging into your Google account. You will submit a request, providing a link to the problematic Google page, and choose the reason why you want it removed from search results. Google also allows you to check the status of the request. Google does everything it can to ensure that your online reputation is not in trouble.
Step 4 – Use The Google Search Console Removal Feature
This Google tool allows you to temporarily hide a specific page from Google search results. You can also clear outdated information that no longer represents your website. But how exactly would you do this?
- You sign in to Google Search Console
- Select your website
- Access the Google removal tools
- Submit a new request – Google offers two options. You either temporarily remove a URL, or clear cached URL. The hiding option will hide a page for about six months, and the clearing option will remove outdated or cached versions without de-indexing the page.
- Monitor the status
Step 5 – Send Feedback Directly to Google
If you notice content that you think should be taken down, you can send feedback directly to Google Search. This option is especially useful if you want to report a specific search result or flag policy-violating content. Next to the title of a page, search for three dots, which you will then click. Afterwards, you want to choose the “Feedback”, and choose the reason you want to send feedback for. Google will give a few options to choose from. Let’s look at some of them:
- Inaccurate content
- Irrelevant content
- Nudity and sexual content
- Hateful or harassing content
- Violent or dangerous content
After you choose the category, you will have to choose if the issue is misleading, outdated, incomplete or incorrect. This action doesn’t guarantee that Google will remove the content from results, but it could be a step towards having a better online reputation.
Step 6 – Suppress Negative Results with Positive Content
Sometimes you don’t need to know how to remove search results, but how to efficiently suppress the negative with the positive. This is a very good method, and everything you need to do is have an SEO strategy that focuses on optimized content. High-quality content will always be Google’s favorite thing. If you manage to provide good content, Google will rank it higher than the negative content. Get yourself a company that offers SEO services and tell them what your goal is. So, an ORM agency helps you to improve and protect your online reputation. If you are curious about how they do it, know that it’s a combination of several elements. They combine optimization with digital PR, content creation and legal strategies. They will monitor what other people or websites on Google say about you, and remove false reviews and defamatory posts. They will make sure that you look great online. Paying for ORM services takes all of the weight off your shoulders. No more stress for you if you want to remove results from Google Search.
Advanced Strategies to Push Down Negative Search Results
SEO Techniques (Backlinking, Schema Markup)
SEO is a powerful tool if you want to hide unwanted results from Google search. Backlinking and schema markup are just some of the techniques you can use. Backlinking is when another website links back to your website. This shows Google that your website is trustworthy, which will lead to it ranking higher in search results. You could look into our guest posting services if you are interested in this technique.
Schema Markup, also known as structured data, is a code that you add to the HTML of your website so that the search engine better understands explicit details about the content on your website. This helps search engines, like Google, get a better grasp of your content, like content or explicit details, so it can later better categorize the page.
Optimize Your Social Profiles for Branded Queries
Social media is an important part of modern SEO trends. Knowing how to use your accounts to your advantage can really boost your business, while also flushing bad Google search results down the drain. You want the same username and display name across all platforms. Fill out your bio, where you can naturally include some keywords. And don’t forget about high-quality photos. Most importantly, cross-link your social media accounts, and have them all link back to your website on Google. You need to create a spider web where your accounts are the web, your website is the center, and the search results are the prey.
