On June 23, 2021, Google rolled out a surprise spam update. Compared to other more significant rollouts, such as the algorithm core updates, which usually take over two weeks to be fully implemented, or the Page experience and the Link spam update, which took two months, respectively a month to finish, this rollout was completed on the same day. Another update on June 28th followed it, later confirmed not to be a separate one but just an addition to the rollout released on the 23rd of June.
The updates were some minor ones. Google did not specify precisely what algorithm changes were targeted with them but only referred to its general Webmaster guidelines released in 2020. But, as in the case of the link spam update, the ultimate goal of the rollout was to improve overall relevancy in user searches.
As a general rule, the sites most affected by spam updates are those that manipulate search engine algorithms to make it appear that they have more relevant content for the user than they do. The update was global, targeting not only websites that present English content. And the rollout also affected the results of image searches.

Unlike the link spam update, this latest rollout of spam detection improvements did not have an effect that was immediately noticeable in the markets. In fact, of all the six major updates released by Google in the summer of 2021, the spam update was the one that had the most negligible impact on the volatility of the SEO network. There were a few noticeable fluctuations in programs like SEMrush or RankRanger, but nothing compared to what was seen in the previous algorithm changes.
The sites targeted by this update can explain the lower impact in the SEO space. In general, those implementing black-hat SEO policies such as keyword stuffing, cloaking, or using spam bots have been affected. The fact that the market impact was relatively insignificant shows that websites try to follow the guidelines imposed by Google.
Most likely not, as this latest update only affected sites that engage in black-hat SEO methods. However, if you feel that your website is experiencing a drop in daily visitors after the update, then you should seek the professional services of a company with extensive experience in SEO, such as GAMIT, to find out the reasons for the decline.
You’ll never have the time to keep in tune with the latest algorithm changes implemented by Google, even more so if they are rolled out at such short intervals, as was the case in the summer of 2021. Along with the team of experts you’ve hired, you should check the health of your site in the Google Console and see if you’ve been misidentified as promoting spammy policies by Google’s algorithms.
