Core features
Google Lens is perhaps one of the most advanced digital tools launched by the tech giant in the last couple of years. What can you do with it? Well, let’s make a list.
- OCR: Google’s image recognition app can be utilized to copy the contextual information present in offline/digital documents. Basically, it can search texts and allows you to interact with them.
- Real-time translations: You can point your phone camera at text in different languages and Google Lens will display live translations.
- Shopping: You can look up different products and their price by simply scanning them with Google’s image recognition app.
- Scan barcodes and more: You can scan business cards, tickets, numbers that you can then call, solve math problems, or even identify different animals, plants, or artwork. AI-based tools like Google’s image recognition app are the future of trends in SEO, and should be a priority for all SEO strategies.

Behind the technology:
With each broad core update to its backend data, Google’s image recognition app has become better and more useful for the average user. How does it all work? Well, the app is built on multiple AI pipelines and it utilizes the most advanced RNNs and transformer-based computer models to improve the accuracy of its predictions.
For vision, the Mountain View-based company makes use of CNNS, while for texts and online search, it makes use of OCR and vector embedding integrated within Google’s Knowledge Graph. So, if you even wondered “What is Google Lens?” it’s enough to know this: It’s the pinnacle of Alphabet’s current AI strategy and it represents a way for the SEO strategies of the future to keep up with modifications in the digital environment.
How to Use Google Lens on Android?
Google Lens on Android
Small Guide:
On Android, Google’s image recognition app is integrated within the OS, and the features of the application are available either through Photos, the Search Bar, Assistant/Gemini, or the direct standalone app.
- In the Google App, you can open Google Lens by tapping on the camera icon
- Images present in the Photos gallery will have a small lens icon in the bottom right, which can be used to analyze them
- You can also activate Google’s image recognition app in the Assistant by choosing the phone camera option in the menu
- Not least, Google Lens is available as a standalone app, and you can also use it alongside other products like Google Maps.
Permissions and setup
There is not much setup to be concerned about, as Google Lens is integrated directly into the OS. If you want, you can download Google’s image recognition app from the Play Store, but that’s a bit redundant, as the features of the application are also present in the other suite of Google apps present on your phone. As for permissions, typically Google Lens only requires phone camera access, storage access, and microphone permissions.
How to Use Google Lens on iPhones
Google Lens on iPhone (UI differences)
Required Apps
Google’s image recognition app for iOS is not available as a standalone application, and therefore, Lens functionalities are only available through Chrome, Photos, Gemini, or the standalone Google main app, all of which are downloadable. On iOS, Google Lens is a bit more limited, and that’s because the application doesn’t have the same level of kernel access. Google Lens on Android is powerful, and businesses can make use of this app, alongside SEO link-building packages, to expand their digital marketing strategies.
Limitations on iOS
Like we previously mentioned, Google Lens on iOS only works with Chrome, Photos, Gemini, or the official Google App. Moreover, Lens is not integrated within the native iPhone camera, nor is it embedded within the device’s assistant, as that is reserved for Siri. On top of that, on iOS, Google Lens cannot be directly invoked from quick settings, gesture commands, or voice actions, as is the case for Android devices. Google Lens SEO optimization for iOS is trickier, but our SEO services can make it work.
Advanced Features & Updates
Video search and voice + Lens integration
Since October 2024, Google has allowed users to search with video/photo prompts as well as utilize vocal cues for the accompanying video. How it works is quite simple. You hold down the scan button either on the Google Home app or in the standalone one, and you can record a short video in which you simultaneously ask questions about the actions presented in it. For example: You could record a video of a train and ask the app to identify which route it usually takes.
Shopping with Google Lens
Shopping Search Results
Perhaps one of the most useful features of Google Lens is the ability to scan for product listings, prices or reviews either by analyzing pictures/screenshots in your phone gallery or by taking photos of local inventory, for which you require more information. Have you, for example, found a particular item on Vinted and you want to know if its price is a good deal? Then, you could screenshot the listing and use Google’s image recognition app in order to search for the product in online directories and compare prices.
Education
Google Lens can also be utilized for solving equations like integrals or derivatives. In the Google App menu, you can click on the homework icon and then point your phone camera at a calculus problem, which you can solve by tapping on it. The same is true for other subjects as well. Do you want to fact-check a statement or identify an animal or plant? In that case, you can use Google Lens in the same manner. The benefit of Lens is that it will not only give you the solution to the homework problem, but it will also offer step-by-step instructions on how to achieve that result.

Product images & angles
Google’s image recognition app primarily utilizes advanced NLP and OPR models in order to identify the photos scanned by users and match them with specific actions. Therefore, in order to follow the latest Google algorithm modifications related to search quality, a good plan would be to capture high-quality pictures of your products and services, from multiple angles, and utilize a plain, static background that will help the OPR model better isolate the objects searched by the user.
Alt-text & contextual content
Even if the user wants to search for one of your commercialized products in the offline medium, the experience and accuracy of the search will depend on how well your products and services are indexed by search engine crawlers.
In order for the scan to link to your product’s pages, you could provide an HTML textual description of the photos present on your website, and also use contextual clues in the image’s background that can help Google’s OPR model better link your product to what’s available online. Moreover, once a match is made, Google could make use of the product schema implemented on your pages with JSON-LD, and show information about the item’s pricing.

Product Search with Google Lens
Google Lens is one of the best marketing tools available for increasing your product’s online conversions and enhancing your brand’s exposure. At its core, Google Lens is nothing more than an advanced visual search application that allows users to scan for objects around them via live camera feeds or Internet-available photos.
With Google Lens, customers can scan a picture they found online and discover the products in it available on your online store. Moreover, as long as your item’s descriptions follow the basic E-E-A-T guidelines, the discoverability of your products in Google Lens will also lead to more conversions.

Pros and Cons for Google Lens
Strengths:
- Versatility: Google Lens is a powerful OCR-based tool that can identify pretty much anything from plants and animals to store-available products or landmarks. It can act as your second pair of eyes and can give you contextual information about what you are seeing or want to search. Plus, it works for both live camera feeds and saved images.
- Translations: Were you ever stuck at a small restaurant in a foreign country and couldn’t decipher what was written on the menu? Well, with Google Lens, you could perform live translations of scannable text, instantly, by only pointing your phone camera at what you want to get translated, even if handwritten.
Live Translation Example
- Integration with other Google Apps: Google Lens is integrated one way or another in pretty much all of Google’s major apps, from Photos and Chrome to the Assistant or even in Maps. It also works on both Android and iOS, and it can be used both for shopping purposes and for educational research.
Limitations:
- Google’s visual search tool makes use of lightweight, on-device ML models like TensorFlow Lite in order to handle real-time recognition of scannable objects offline. But this is limited and can lead to recognition issues.
- For more complex queries, the information is sent to the cloud and interpreted by advanced OCR models. This, in turn, is a privacy concern, as pretty much anything you send via Lens will end up on Google’s servers. Sure, these images are not used for advertising purposes, but they can, however, be utilized in the training of new AI algorithms.
Alternatives to Google Lens
Alternatives to Google Lens
Pinterest Lens
Pinterest’s visual scan feature is limited only to Pinterest’s digital database and for this reason, it can suggest visually similar items, but the purchase links to those items are typically reserved for partnered merchants. The app developed by Pinterest also makes use of OCR models, albeit a more simplified version and the integration of the app is only reserved for the Pinterest platform
Bing Visual Search
Bing Visual Search offers many of the functionalities present in Google’s visual scan application, but with a distinct set of limitations. Like with Google, users can use Bing Visual search in order to find similar images, identify objects, conduct product searches and extract texts that can later be used for translation purposes. However, the OCR of the app is less advanced, and the product’s features are mostly limited to Microsoft’s ecosystem.
Amazon Lens
Amazon Lens is a visual scan tool that’s directly integrated within the Amazon shopping app, and it allows users to scan product barcodes or find similar or exact products sold either directly by Amazon or by site-present partners. Amazon Lens integrates directly with Rufus, Amazon’s AI assistant, and it’s useful for performing real-time comparisons with products available on the Amazon platform.

Future of Visual Search & AI in Search Engines
Future of Visual Search & AI in Search Engines
Predictions for 2026–2030
The digital search medium has undergone rapid changes in the last couple of months, and the future, so far, looks like it will be dominated by a multimodal approach in which search engines will combine both texts and multimedia information for the matching of users’ queries.
Search engines are less reliant nowadays on simple, text-based queries and have started to adopt real-time AR searches made possible by OCR-focused tools like Google’s visual scan applications. The next five years will see a rise in real-time video searches with voice integration, hyper-personalized results will become the norm, and visual search with the help of smart devices will become widespread.
Impact on SEO and content strategy
Visual search will continue to rise in the next couple of years, and therefore, the SEO strategies of tomorrow will need to focus on photo and video optimization, on the introduction of appropriate structured data and metadata in the product’s HTML fields, and on the contextual relevance of targeted keywords. The visual search industry will become increasingly multimodal in the next couple of years, and therefore, the success of future SEO strategies will be dependent on their complexity.
