Google announced on September 24th, 2019, the release of a new series of broad core updates. It was the third such update of 2019 and the second in a row to be announced by Google on the company’s Twitter page. The September 2019 core update was global and affected indexed search results in more than just English.

Google core updates are not just focused on a single algorithm optimization but affect a broad spectrum of services, which is why they are also called broad releases. Their purpose is to improve the overall services offered by Google through its algorithms, and the September 2019 core update was no exception.
Google has reiterated that pages negatively affected by broad core updates are not being punished for something they did wrong but are simply collateral victims in the algorithm’s process of changing priorities with the latest update. According to Google, whatever changes you make to improve your rankings will most likely not be noticed until after the next core update is released, which usually happens every four months.

In terms of effects, with the implementation of the update, it was possible to observe an increase in the SERPs ranking of sites with a varied link profile, and an increase in the priority of sites with quality editorial articles, even if they did not benefit from a high number of hyperlinks. A significant boost could also be observed among sites offering video content.
Google’s algorithms have become stricter after this update with websites offering medical services or information, and the implementation of this process has been noticeable since the deployment of the medical update in August 2018. The volatility recorded in the medical and YMYL websites was significant, with some sites dropping by as much as 80% while others recorded massive increases in traffic. Overall, at least in the medical domain, the increase in SEO visibility was quite pronounced. Still, it could not cover the losses brought by the March update, which decreased the visibility of some medical sites by more than 55%.
In contrast, a positive impact has been observed within the news website, with Google Search & Discover visibility increasing after the implementation of the September update. This contrasts the effects of the June update that brought losses of over 70% for some domains. Overall, the changes brought about by the September update were less pronounced than those of June and March, with the maximum volatility value registered in SEMrush not surpassing 6.1.
