Described as a general update, this change in algorithms was designed by Google to improve the ranking of “relevant” and “satisfying” content for “searchers from all types of sites”. What this shows is that Google has taken another step towards promoting content creators and quality content that meets the needs of the reader in his pursuit for answers on the search engine.
Contents:
Main Objectives
As mentioned in the previous statement, the main objective is that of promoting content creators as well as increasing the ranking of quality and relevant content. The update follows the trajectory of its precursors, the November and December updates but, according to Search Engine Journal, it appears to have another implicitly integrated objective of rebalancing the distribution of traffic resulting from editorial sites, social networking platforms and UCG.
Other main features of the update, congruent to the main objective, are:
- A large scale of applicability: unlike past changes, this update is applied to all types of sites and does not target a single, specific industry.
- It is part of a systematic series of actions aimed at improving the quality of the content: as mentioned earlier, Google has made their intention to increase the number of core updates quite clear. We have seen this in action these past few years as in 2022 we had two core updates, in 2023 there were four, and in 2024 we also had four such updates.
- An increased focus on creator visibility. Google is not only trying to promote quality content but also increase the general visibility of creators in order to answer the very specific needs of the searcher in the most organic and authentic way.
Time Line
In March 2025, the American giant “shocked” the world with yet another core update, just three months after the release of its latest one. Google seems to be having a bias towards the month of March, as this is the third year they decided to mark the coming of spring with a core update. This release marks the first core update of the year and the first of many more which are to come.
The official release took place on March 13 and after exactly 14 days of rollout, it was completed on the 27th.
Although this 14-days period may allude to a more complex intervention when compared to the astonishingly short period of 6 days it took the December update to complete, we should not link the duration to the ramification of the update. In fact, a period of 14 days is in line with Google’s history of timelines.
How it Affected the Market
According to Search Engine Land, the week starting with March 10th was the most volatile in terms of SERPs in over a year. It all made sense once Google announced on the 13th their core update timeline. Although the update regarded every industry, the first week under the new update showed clear “winners” and “losers” which allowed market analysts to make some predictions regarding the update:
- Forums are at risk of being paired back: two of the most major “losers” under the new update are DIYChatroom & GarageJournal, which have both experienced great results in the past year. Their ranking seems to have been overtaken by other sites such as Reddit and features like Forums widgets, and Popular Products grids.
- Google continues to fight against Programmatic Content. This update has showcased the downfall of data-driven pages that took an automatic or semi-automatic approach to SEO.
As stated earlier, this update did not target specific industries and it had an impact on all sectors and, as it is often the case with core updates, some sites gained more views under the new algorithms while others experienced significant losses.
